## Assessing Relationship Theories

Assessing Relationship Theories

Since this week we’re looking at relationship theories it’s time to apply those theories to our own lives! Some of the theories from last week can be applied within this paper as well. For instance the theory CMM can be compared to the relational dialectics theory! The theories can build upon each other each week. Feel free to use theories we’ve already covered or theories from this week and apply them to your paper. Before diving into the assignment for the week ensure you’ve read the chapters for preparation.

For this week’s assignment there are two parts. Part One:

It’s time to do a little digging! This week you’ll need to interview TWO people. First you’ll interview someone you are close to (such as a family member, close friend, neighbor, etc ). Then you’ll interview someone you’re not as close with (co-worker, neighbor, friend of a friend, student advisor, babysitter, etc ). In your paper this week share who you interviewed and what relationship you have with them, either close or not as close.

These interviews don’t need to be long (maybe three to five minutes) but be sure to take notes of the interview and your observations. For your interviews simply ask your interviewee “who are you?”. After they’ve answered you can repeat the question or offer follow up queries. Then ask “What do you want?”.

Where did the questions lead? Did the answers connect to any of the theories (such as social penetration theory, etc )? What facets of self were commonly revealed versus those areas that need a bit more history or interaction before exposing them? Part Two:

Continuing in your paper write 500 words (two pages) thinking back to week one when we all started introducing ourselves.

Could you relate to the personality structure talked about in Chapter 8 (Social penetration theory)?

Do you agree with Altman and Taylor’s theory of Social Penetration that there is a degree of intimacy and depth of penetration?

Does ‘instant intimacy’ exist?

What’s at the core of your onion (referring to chapter 8)?

How would you designate your own personality layers?

Then imagine you are a communication theorist. Share your ‘hunches’ and dive deeper analyzing these theories. Are there any problems or ‘holes’ in the theories? Remember theories are just ‘hunches’ and these theories are updated frequently. For instance, the social penetration theory relies on the construction of self, self-disclosure, and overall process of communication as well that image of the onion suggest that our self-disclosure is asymmetrical. Or is the social information processing theory outdated? Give your thoughts and be as critical as you can because this how these theories are updated or proved correct or incorrect!

Ensure your papers are formatted with size 12 font Times New Roman and double spaced.
