Anthropology paper!

First Writing Assignment Anthropology 100 Diamond, Jared The Third Chimpanzee Prologue, Chapters 1 and 2, and Epilogue

Myths and storytelling are an integral part of the human experience. Remember that anthropologists use the term “myth” in a way that is different from common usage. When an anthropologist refers to a specific story as a “myth,” s/he does not mean that it is false. Anthropologists define myths as stories that have significant social meanings and often prescribe codes of correct, ethical behavior and/or prohibit incorrect, unethical acts. In other words, myths may or may not be “factual,” but they are always “true.” Truth and fact are two different concepts. The sentence “thou shalt not steal” is a truth because it prescribes a specific rule to live by, but it is not a “fact” because some people do steal. The sentence “theft and property crime declined by 7.2% over the past 30 years” is a “fact,” but not a “truth,” because it describes the way things are, but doesn’t offer any advice concerning what we should do or how we should feel about it. Science is often considered to be an “objective” exercise, and to a large extent this is correct. However, the information discovered by scientists can have “mythical” implications, just as much as any other information. Jared Diamond discusses many facts in The Third Chimpanzee, but he does not stop with simple description. Instead, he uses these facts to try to arrive at a number of ethical truths concerning how we should act. For your paper, read Diamond’s Prologue, Part One (Chapters 1 and 2), and Epilogue (Nothing Learned, and Everything Forgotten?) and look for the following themes:

1) Taxonomy: Classification is never “value free.” The way we organize our experiences into conceptual categories is influenced by the way we think the world should be. In turn, our classification systems influence the way we think things “really are.” What is Diamond’s opinion of the way humans, common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and bonobos (“pygmy chimps,” Pan paniscus) are classified? How should they be classified, according to Diamond? Is Diamond’s argument convincing? Why or why not?

2) Ethics: The way we treat others is, in part, influenced by how well we know them (or how well we think we know them). If chimpanzees were re-classified as members of our genus, would we treat them the same way as we do now (e.g. putting them in zoos, performing medical experiments on them, and destroying their habitat by deforestation)? If not, why not?

3) Speculation: A few million years ago, there were several species of large-brained, human-like creatures on earth, and as recently as 29,000 years ago, there were two (humans and neandertals). Today, there is only a single species of large-brained, bipedal hominid left on the planet. In your opinion, and based on your readings in Diamond and Haviland, and on lectures, what might modern life be like if there were two species of intelligent, culture-using hominids alive today? Would we get along, or would we fight? Would we cooperate or compete? Would we welcome them into our society, or would we shun them? Why do you think this would be the case, and do you feel that this should be the case, or would you oppose the general trends? Why or why not?

Answer all three questions. Your writing must meet college-level standards, and your paper should be a minimum of 7 double-spaced pages. Longer papers are acceptable if you have a lot to say. Because I expect high-quality writing, I am willing to accept rough drafts and make suggestions about ways to improve your papers (and thus improve your grade), and you are encouraged to take advantage of that offer. You are also encouraged to work together with your classmates, although of course the final draft should be your own original work.

Assignment 2: Philosophy and Justice: What is a Just Society?

The goal of this assignment is to explore the meaning of justice. In a 3–4-page paper, address the following:

Choose one of the following identities that may be the basis for discrimination in contemporary society: race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual identity, or socio-economic class.

Explain at least one social philosophy from the textbook that attempts to address injustice on the basis on the identity you choose in Part 1.  For instance, you might discuss utilitarianism, Rawls, Marx, Nozick, Du Bois, Cornell West, Beauvoir, Chavez, and/or Lorde. If the theory has a clear correlate, please discuss it as well. Try and illustrate your understanding of the ideas with concrete examples and to remember to support your account of the theory with citations to the textbook and online lectures in correct APA format. Use this APA Citation Helper as a convenient reference for properly citing resources. Contrast the social justice theory discussed in Part 2 with the intersectional approach. Try and illustrate the points of contrast with a relevant example.

A new study out of the University of Iowa shows that close to 4% of pregnant women in the United States are vaping. Surprisingly, the rate of e- cigarette use is actually higher among pregnant women than women who aren’t pregnant. According to Dr. Jennifer Wu, “babies face the same risks from nicotine exposure (with vaping), which include brain and lung damage and increasing risks of sudden infant death syndrome.” It’s been proven that even the flavoring chemicals in vape juices have a negative effect on the correct development of the fetus. This survey did have a small silver lining, however. Conventional cigarette use was much lower among pregnant women (8%) than among those who weren’t pregnant (14%). Researchers attribute the use to pregnant women turning to vaping because e- cigarettes are usually advertised as “safe” but fail to mention all the side effects of the chemicals. https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20190429/more-pregnant-women-vaping-study-says

student post 2*******************************

This week after recent life changing events I decided to find an article that I could relate to. I chose an article that explains how addiction affects those around the addict, specifically the children. I am very aware that having an addict as a parent causes trauma emotionally for the child but reading about it makes me feel a little less crazy knowing its normal in that particular situation. In the article it states that the children are not able to deal with their emotional reality. This causes kids to have built up anger, self esteem issues, anxiety, trust issues and many more. I think with the huge epidemic of drugs currently its good to know and understand the affect it will have on other people not just the addict.

ECE 612 Week 1 Discussion 2 ( Jasmine's Case Study ) ~ ( Latest Syllabus – Perfect Tutorial – Scored 100% )

Jasmine’s Case Study

Jasmine, a teacher for toddlers, is scheduled to start her day in the classroom at 6:30 a.m. On Monday, Jasmine arrived at 6:45, and on Tuesday, she showed up at 7:05.  Today, Jasmine appeared at 6:50.  Jasmine’s team-teacher is frazzled, and parents are tired of waiting to talk with Jasmine. The director needs to finish a grant application, but is distracted by having to fill in for Jasmine to cover teacher-student ratios.  As Jasmine breezes through the classroom door, she says, “Just change my starting time to 7:00 a.m because I can get here by 7:00, no problem!”
The director responds, “Jasmine, arrive in time to be in the classroom with the children at 6:30 a.m.  If I bend the rules for you, I have to bend them for everyone.”  Jasmine is upset and begins complaining about all the burdens of her personal life: battery trouble with her 1991 Chevy, a sick daughter, boyfriend problems, and worrying about her mother with Alzheimer’s.  Jasmine reminds the director how punctual she was before her husband divorced her and she started feeling depressed.

What would you do as Jasmine’s director?

Referencing the specific decision-making strategies outlined in the assigned reading, present a response to Jasmine’s situation of adhering to the “letter of the law” and a response to Jasmine’s situation adhering to the “spirit of the law.”  Next, explain which you would use from the perspective of the center director/Jasmine’s supervisor.  Include an evaluation of Jasmine’s situation from your assigned interpretation of policy as well as an action plan for its resolution.
