Module 02 Written Assignment – Literary Analysis of Modernist Literature

Write a 2-page literary analysis of one of the short stories from the assigned readings for Module 02, explaining how the author used characteristics of modernist literature or dystopian elements to create the dominant theme of the short story. You should include two of the terms used in your Module 02 literary terms exercise, and highlight the unique elements utilized in either modernist or dystopian fiction from your reading this week. Consider the following: What was the main theme of your chosen story? (This is the main idea or message of the story). Examples of theme might be man vs. technology, man vs. nature, love, death, coming of age, freedom, the hero or heroine’s quest, etc. If you chose a dystopian story, what vision of the future did the reading reflect? Which of the literary terms or characteristics of modernist fiction did you find in your chosen story? (See your lesson content and exercise in Module 02 for more on these).

Focus as much as you can on how this short story exemplified the genre you have selected. You will also find it helpful to research the selected work online and in our library. You may use more than one article for your paper. Research includes at least one outside library article on the work selected.

WEEK 3 ONLINE CLASS: SCIENCE WRITING
Not all Creative Nonfiction is memoir!
A lot of great essays that fall into the Creative Nonfiction genre are science-oriented.  They are considered “creative nonfiction” because they blend elements of fiction writing (plot, narrative arc, character, dialogue, etc.) into their structure.
Lately, both the writing and science communities have discovered that people take in scientific information better when it is told like a story. For this reason, it is key that even the most data-driven of scientists know a bit about storytelling!
This week, I am asking you to read two “science writing” essays and analyze them for the creative nonfiction tools they employ.
I’ve created a “Journal” for you in BbLearn and called it by your name. In that journal, I’d like you to answer the questions presented below.
Article 1: David Quamman, “The Short Happy Life of a Serengeti Lion”
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2013/08/serengeti-lions/
Are there characters in this essay?  Who are they?  Who are the main ones and who are the supporting ones?
Is there a plot?  What is it?  When does it peak and how does it get resolved?
Article 2: Jason Bittel, “Seeing Stars”
https://www.nrdc.org/onearth/seeing-stars
What is Bittel’s “frame” for this piece?  How is he capturing his audience’s attention in order to deliver scientific facts?
How would you describe his tone?
Thinking back on the piece, what fact sticks out most in your mind?  How did the author call attention to that particular fact?
Your comments need to be posted on your journal by midinight on Monday, 9/10.

close, close reading

A longer assignment is posted under files with tips and an example. The goal is to read the language closely but goes beyond just labeling something as a metaphor. Instead, you will say Sheridan employs that metaphor to do something…build a character, play with the topic, wink at the audience, make us consider how we think about others…whatever you see.

I am interested in getting you to work on a skill of close reading that we can build on as we approach our final papers. This response will help me assess where you are and what we need to do as a class to read more closely.

Art talk

Art Talk – Renaissance in Quattrocento Italy, Sacrifice of Isaac (Section 1 Ends Here)

Images: Filippo Brunelleschi, Sacrifice of Isaac, 1401-03, panel, gilt bronze relief and Lorenzo Ghiberti, Sacrifice of Issac, 1401-03, gilt bronze panel relief.

Step 1:This Discussion is divided into 3 parts.  Why were these panels commissioned? How did the artist choose to cast the image?  In other words, what is shown on the quattrofoil?  Make sure that you read both the textbook and the Instructor PDF file.  In addition, please refer to the figures by name. Using your Language of Art handout, choose and explain 1 function (on page 1) for both panels.  You may choose the same function for both panels.  Or, you can choose a different function for each panel.  Post your student comments for this question.

Step 2 – In order to get full credit, answer the question and then respond to a minimum of 3 other student postings with comments (see Guidelines for Art Talk and Ground Rules in your Syllabus).  Be sure to complete this before the Section closes.  I cannot reopen a Section once it has closed.

Step 3 – Remember, the Discussions are separated into 3 Sections and close Weekly – on Sunday at 11:59 PM.  The closing day will always be the same during the semester.  This means that if Sunday is a holiday, please plan accordingly to complete the Discussion.  The Discussions are open for 1 week and no extra time is allowed.

Step 4 – Once a Discussion has closed, I will read & graded them – this may take a few days. Once graded, I will send an Announcement with the answers and a summation of what I read from your postings and comments. You will be able to see your grades in the Grades link after I have read/graded the Discussion.
